Topic Description:

History of Mediumship

The history of mediumship is a rich and complex journey that spans ancient traditions, religious revolutions, and modern spiritual awakenings. This topic explores the evolution of mediumship from early shamanic and oracular practices—such as the Oracle of Delphi and indigenous spirit communication—to the rise of Spiritualism in the 19th century and its cultural impact in Europe and America. Special attention is given to the Fox Sisters, whose alleged communication with spirits sparked a global movement, and to prominent historical mediums like Emma Hardinge Britten and Leonora Piper. The topic also examines the societal, religious, and scientific responses to mediumship over time, including the pushback from skeptics and the support from notable scholars and scientists of the era. By understanding the roots and transformation of mediumship, we gain insight into humanity’s enduring desire to connect with the unseen world—and how those connections have influenced personal belief, grief, healing, and the search for meaning.
